What an online visit can settle

Think of the visit as a discussion about your health, your goals and the care needed to make a decision.

The source notes used here were recorded on or before September 26, 2026. Later changes may be missing.

Choose the kind of visit you can use

A first visit can use messages answered later or a live conversation, says medical-board guidance. Either kind must meet the standard expected in person.

State rules differ; this account of online prescribing is dated September 26, 2026.

Ask whether the visit is video, phone or a written exchange. Ask how to send a question if an answer on the form does not fit your situation.

Make room for an in-person step

When a remote review needs tests or a physical exam, medical-board policy calls for the clinician to arrange them or refer the patient.

A local clinic is another category of care to consider. Ask an online service how it would arrange a physical exam if that becomes part of the plan.

Settle the payment terms before the assessment: what gets charged if more records are needed, or no medicine is prescribed? Request the cancellation terms too.

Leave with something you understand

Try putting the plan into your own words. Which question was answered? What still needs a test, a record or another visit? Who is handling that next step?

For any proposed prescription, get the product name, the reason for choosing it and the plan for check-ins. Keep a note of questions left open.
